Keeping Kids and Yourself Active at Home
Being at home does not mean that you can’t keep fit and active. Whether you are stuck at home in isolation, have an injury or even just a Snow Day, there are still plenty of activities you can do at home to stay fit and healthy. Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind. It is not always just about losing weight, it can help lower risk of some diseases and help you look and feel better. Exercising the body releases chemicals, endorphins, that can help a person to feel good.
Here are our top five activities you can do when not in school or the workplace to help stay active and mentally strong

1. Yoga
Equipment – Yoga mat and clear space in your room
This is a great activity that anyone can do no matter how old or young you are. Yoga is for everyone and can help you stay flexible and strong without putting added stress on your joints. There are plenty of yoga channels available online that can allow you to take up Yoga anywhere and anytime.
2. Hula Hooping
Equipment – Hula Hoop
Hula hooping is a PE activity brought into schools in 1960’s to help increase exercise in children whilst making it fun. Now it is seen as a fitness activity for adults and children, to boost your health in a fun way. It burns calories, boosts cardiovascular fitness and challenges your core muscles.
3. Throw Catch
Equipment – Any size ball
Throwing and catching a ball helps improve hand-eye coordination. From all ages, you can improve your hand-eye coordination by throwing a ball and catching it. Starting from simply throwing a ball and catching yourself, you can move to throwing with someone else, to moving to one handed, adding in more balls, and then progressing to juggling.
4. Gymnastics
Equipment – Can use anything around the house
Gymnastics is a great sport for children of all ages, and it is something you can still do in the comfort of your own home. You can practice your cartwheels in the garden, forward rolls and back rolls on a comfy floor, headstands against a wall, and even lifting yourself into a bridge on a flat surface. Obviously, safety is a priority, but there are so many gymnastics activities you can do in and around the house.
5. Walking
Equipment – Just yourself and some footwear!
Sometimes the easiest way to stay fit is also the best way. Simply walking and keeping your body moving is the best way to stay active. We should all aim for 10,000 steps per day, which sounds a lot but helps keep you active. To help reach this number it can be as simple as walking your pet dog, planning a treasure hunt around the house and garden, walking up and down the stairs, or walking at home on the spot.
Staying fit and healthy at home does not have to be taxing, it can be fun and accessible. The importance of staying fit at home and maintaining that healthy mind.
