Inspired from The Summer Games?

Inspiring Students Through the Olympics and Paralympics Games.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are powerful sources of inspiration that extend well beyond the realm of sports. Their impact can be profoundly felt in educational settings, where their values of excellence, resilience, and inclusivity can motivate students and shape their character. Paris 2024 was another amazing set of Games that brought to the attention new sports, memorable achievements and new heroes/heroines. We have our top 3 tips on how you can use the recent Summer Games to enhance PE and Sports in your school, as well as the top 3 sports we felt took over the public’s interest and excitement this summer.

  1. Celebrating Achievement and Perseverance

Both the Olympics and Paralympics showcase remarkable stories of achievement and perseverance. Athletes often overcome significant challenges, whether physical, mental, or emotional. By sharing these stories in both out in the field or in the classrooms, teachers can educate students about the importance of resilience and determination. Lessons can be designed around famous athletes’ journeys, encouraging students to reflect on their own challenges and how they can overcome them.

  1. Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

The Paralympics, in particular, highlight the abilities of athletes with disabilities, fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. Schools can leverage these events to promote discussions about diversity, disability awareness, and acceptance. By integrating lessons on the achievements of Paralympians, students learn to appreciate differences and understand the importance of inclusivity, both on and off the field. And most importantly, make sport more inclusive to students of all abilities.

  1. Encouraging Participation in Sports

The excitement of the Olympics and Paralympics can inspire students to get involved in sports, regardless of their abilities. The Games can also open students up to more sports that aren’t on the curriculum. To help encompass this enthusiasm in sport as a whole, Schools can host Olympic and Paralympic-themed sports days or tournaments, encouraging students to participate in a variety of activities. These events promote physical fitness and teamwork, while also helping students discover new interests and passions in sports.

Sports that took over our screens this summer:

  1. Kayak Cross – It’s a knockout meets kayaking, this was by far the most talked about sport at the Summer Olympics. Four competitors were dropped into the water and then the mayhem ensued.
  2. Wheelchair Rugby – Team GB were defending champions in this ultra competitive and contact sport. Handling, movement and teamwork showcase this enthralling sport.
  3. Climbing – From Speed Climbing to Bouldering, this was the Olympic Games that brought the excitement and skill level to the sport.
