Express your creativity during International Dance Day

Saturday, 29 April marks International Dance Day, celebrating all forms of dance and movement, as well as shining a light on diversity and talent.

As dance is an inclusive form of movement, children can express their individuality whilst developing their rhythmic skills. It can also be a great vehicle to use in school to develop core coordination and balance skills.

Our Creative Movement Set caters for a class where you can explore dance using low-tech equipment essential for PE store cupboards, such as hoops, scarves and wands. For a structured session, we like this YouTube video by Little Movers, which uses scarves designed for a simple KS1 routine to help children understand counting with movement.

Of course, International Dance Day is about recognising and celebrating dance forms from around the world, and your session could include movements used in other cultures. Try this Bhangra inspired video, which includes easy movements, and why not incorporate some of our kits to make it more colourful and fun?

For something more energetic and to engage KS2, try this video with our pompoms. Once children master the art of coordinating their hands and feet in different directions, there could be scope to develop Cheerleading routines. Our 1st Play Cheerleading Pack and Cheerleading Cards provide a good starting point for basic movements and help develop more gymnastic abilities.

International Dance Day shines a spotlight on all the varied dance forms and the ability dance has to engage with many different people on different levels. For children and teachers, these lessons are about creative freedom, as there is no right or wrong way to dance. You can take elements of different dance forms to create something entirely new, using equipment and aids that are readily available.
