After school fun with archery
After school clubs have become increasingly popular for Primary Schools but finding fun and easy activities to run is challenging. Many of the teachers we speak to want engaging games that are simple for children of all abilities to play.
Archery is a fun and inclusive sport that helps develop hand-eye coordination and core strength in children of different abilities.
The sucker arrow tips on our starter kits are safe for all children to use under supervision. Working in partnership with Archery GB, the national governing body, our kits are specifically designed for teachers and sports coordinators who have no formal archery training.
Here are some ideas for after-school games which can be played in or outdoors with beginner’s archery products, all available from Davies Sports.
- Shoot the hoop! Using hula hoops from your PE cupboard, set out four on the floor at different distances from one another and assign a score to each starting at 2 points for the nearest hoop and 8 for the furthest. Allot a set number of arrows for each child to try and hit as many of targets as possible. Increase the challenge by assigning two teams to see who can accumulate the most points within a set time limit.
- Archery bowling. Set up a 10-ring target either upright or on the floor. Each child has to try and hit a 10, and if so they’ve got a Strike. If they miss the 10, they can make up to that number by shooting again, for example, if they shoot a 6, a 4 is needed to make up to the score to 10 and collect a Spare. Play as many rounds as you like and tot up the score at the end.
- Spot Race: Place six coloured spots on an archery target and ask the children to hit each one in a clockwise direction. They have three chances per spot before having to move onto the next. The one who shoots the most spots in the fastest time is the winner.
There is so much versatility with archery. Try it in your school!
