2024 Year in Sport Review

As we welcome in the new year its important to look back at the amazing achievements and sporting experiences that the last 12 months has brought to us. Its important to remember all of the successes and moments of inspiration to take forward and encourage students and kids to get into sport more. From the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the Euro 2024 Championships in Germany, the last year has provided so many sporting inspirations.

Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games

The ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ returned after just three years to bring hope, excitement and triumph. The Games are the most watched sporting event and brings the world together across 329 events over 32 different sports. For Team GB, we had amazing moments from Mountain Biking, Bouldering, and the brilliant Kayak Cross, then accumulating on the Athletics Track with Keely Hodgkinson winning gold for 800m.

A month later the Paralympic Games came to Paris showcasing the real superheroes of sport. There were no changes to the sports in 2024 with 549 events in 22 sports. From para Table Tennis to Bochia, the Games have inspired schools to become more inclusive for all students to have access to sport.

Euro Championships

The European Championships returned to a single country in Germany after the experiment in 2021 of several countries hosting matches. With Scotland and England representing the Home Nations, the tournament took over the early Summer with boys and girls playing football wherever they could. With England making the final, Football nearly came home for the men’s team since 1966. The recent success of the Lionesses was so close to being replicated by the men but like in 2023 for the women’s team it was Spain who beat them in the final.

T20 Cricket World Cups

The World Cup tournament for the T20 version of Cricket was extra special this year with both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments being played. England and Wales were the returning Champions in the Men’s tournament but they exited at the Semi Final stage as India came home victors. In the Women’s tournament, England and Wales just missed out on the semi-finals as New Zealand took home the title.

There were even more amazing achievements and inspiring events throughout the year from teenage sensation Luke Littler taking the Darts world by storm, Mark Cavendish becoming the most decorated cyclist in Tour de France history and Alex Yee taking not only the Triathlon Olympic Gold Medal but also becoming the World Series champion. There was so much for each person to be inspired from and how schools can take this on and help create future champions.
