Welcome to the new Netball Super League
The Netball Super League is back, but in 2025 there are plenty of new changes to bring some added excitement to the competition. With more and more people watching netball on tv and in the stadiums, these new developments are expected to take the Netball Super League on to the next level. However, what is in store for the 2025 season:
New Name/Brand:
In October 2023, England Netball announced plans to relaunch the Netball Super League in 2025 as part of a push to professionalise the division. The new set up and league was confirmed in May 2024 with the number of teams changed from ten to eight. A new logo was introduced, new website and new set up as the aim to build on the 2023 World Cup silver medal and make Netball a professional sport in UK.
New Teams:
With the reduction of teams in the league, this meant some teams sadly had to drop out of the league, including five-time winners Team Bath. They were joined by Strathclyde Sirens, Surrey Storm and Severn Stars. Joining the Manchester Tunder, Loughborough Lightning, London Pulse, Leeds Rhinos, London Mavericks and the rebranded LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons are two new teams in Birmingham Panthers and Nottingham Forest Netball. The two new professional teams aims to make the league even more competitive.
New Rules
As the new season looked to launch a few new rules have been introduced to make the game faster and more exciting for the spectator. Here are the new rules coming in this year:
- No game can end in a draw with matches going to extra time if the scores are level.
- There will be 10 minutes of extra time with a one minute half-time break.
- If the scores are still level, play will continue until one team reaches a two-goal lead.
- 90-second tactical timeouts will be available per team. These must be called by a player and only after a goal has been scored.
- Bonus points for losing teams who finish within five points or less of their opponent
- A two-point super shot will be allowed, similar to the Australian Super Netball League. This will come into effect during the new periods of extra time.
This is a really exciting time for Netball in UK as the game looks to make a big step within UK Sport. The step to professionalism and expanding the reach of the game provides that career pathway for many young female sports enthusiasts, and will aim to make England, Scotland and Wales more competitive on the international market.
