What Size Football Do We Need?
Whether you are buying a football for your back garden, or a match ball for your club or school. having the right sized footballs is key. This helps with the understanding and development of the core basics of football. Playing with the wrong size ball can have a real effect on the fundamentals of football, and this is extremely important in Football as players grow within the sport. Having young children playing with the wrong size ball will not only affect balance, dribbling and control, it will also disrupt their abilities in shooting, heading and have longer standing implications on health aspects.
We have a simple guide to making sure you get the right size of football for your school or team to make sure you are compliant with FA guidelines. From Size 2 to 5, it can be confusing but here is our quick step guide:
Size 2 – These are called Midi Balls and are for players Under 5. These are best for skill practice and introduction of football to young players. With a circumference of 18-20 inches (46-51 cm)
Size 3 – These are for players aged under 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 years old. This is the smallest ball size used un junior games. This is also across both male and female versions. These have a circumference of 23-24 inches (58-61 cm)
Size 4 – These for age grade players under 11, 12, 13 and 14 years old. This is the progress ball as players start developing more skills and team aspects. It can also be used for Futsal. These have a circumference of 25-26 inches (63.5-66 cm)
Size 5 – These balls are for standard matches for any players aged 15 and above. This is again the same for both male and female players. This is the standard size for professional and amateur football and is used in both matches and training sessions. These have a circumference of 27-28 inches (68-70 cm)
These sizes are universal and across both male and female sides of the beautiful game, as stipulated by the Football Association (FA) in UK.
